Very intriguing – have never heard either of those records, will seek them out. Meanwhile, at the very least in the service of completism, I'd urge a listen to Astral Weeks. Davis is more than a sideman on the record; he's way up in the mix, and a vital counterpoint to Van's voice and guitar.
I don’t know the Dealin’ album but the 1990 Live at Sweet Basil quintet album opens with the title track (when I return home I’ll check the liner notes for any clues about the film project).
In between the two albums is Song for Wounded Knee (Flying Dutchman) with DeJohnette & Joe Beck. Spacy and political.
I've had a copy of that Epistrophy LP for MANY years now, never knew there was a third track! Never came across a copy of "dealin" but I'll have to look for that as well...nice to see a review of ANY of Richard Davis' work pop up online here in 2025. Next, have to read the Bill Dixon article, came across some needledrops on CD of his early vinyl just the other day while looking in an old box for PSD era Fushitsusha...serendipity...Thanks for the review of the Richard Davis...
Was just listening to Epistrophy and Nows The Time as I finish up some comments on Joe Chambers!!! Thanks for this great post...

I really need to check out these Richard Davis albums!
