Burning Ambulance Music, the record label division of the Burning Ambulance media empire, will release two new albums on Friday, August 5. They’re amazing, and sound nothing like anything else you’ll hear this year.
Breath Of Air, Breath Of Air (BAM84) Buy on Bandcamp
Breath Of Air is a new trio featuring electric guitarist Brandon Ross of Harriet Tubman, and violinist Charles Burnham and drummer Warren Benbow of James "Blood" Ulmer's Odyssey. Their self-titled debut album was recorded at the Sound It Out concert series in New York in February 2020, and mixed by legendary engineer Scotty Hard. The music blends blues, the Black string band tradition (Carolina Chocolate Drops, Ebony Hillbillies), rock ’n’ roll and power drone into something wholly unique in the world of improvised music.

José Lencastre, Inner Voices (BAM85) Buy on Bandcamp
José Lencastre is an up-and-coming Portuguese saxophonist who has recorded for Clean Feed, and co-runs his own Phonogram Unit label. His quintet participated in the Burning Ambulance Festival, a five-hour concert that streamed online on New Year's Day. Inner Voices is an exploratory sonic journey Lencastre created in partnership with producer and electronic musician Ary. Overdubbing multiple horn lines, enhancing the music through judicious use of echo, reverb and EQ, and interacting with live electronics in real time, Lencastre creates an immersive sonic experience that will appeal equally to fans of the World Saxophone Quartet and Adrian Sherwood.
Watch the video for “Momena”:
Each album comes in a heavy-duty mini-LP style gatefold sleeve, printed on textured paper, with art and design by I.A. Freeman. They’re available individually, of course, but if you’re just catching up with the label’s output, we’re also selling 6CD bundles, allowing you to get all of Burning Ambulance Music’s releases to date for $60 plus shipping. That includes the two titles above, plus:
• Senyawa’s Alkisah (ritualistic Indonesian art-metal; Pitchfork review here)
• Ivo Perelman & Nate Wooley’s Polarity (improvised trumpet/sax duos; Free Jazz Collective review here)
• Matthew Shipp & Whit Dickey’s Reels (piano/drums duos; DownBeat review here)
• Graham Haynes & Submerged’s Echolocation (bass-heavy trumpet and electronics; PopMatters review here)
I thank you in advance for your support of Burning Ambulance Music and these amazing artists, and look forward to your help in getting these CDs out of my house.
See you in a week!
Delightful albums!
